Yet the alternative—a future where artificial intelligence reinforces rather than reduces global inequalities—makes such efforts essential for creating a more just and sustainable technological future.
The window for action remains open, but it may not remain so indefinitely. As AI systems become more deeply embedded in global infrastructure and governance frameworks become more entrenched, the opportunities for creating alternative approaches may diminish. The choices made today about AI governance will echo through decades of technological development, making current decisions about inclusion, equity, and technological sovereignty among the most consequential of our time.
